Carey McRae is a partner in the Birmingham office. He represents numerous types of healthcare providers, including hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, home health agencies, psychiatric hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, physicians, and dialysis providers. Carey assists clients with state and federal regulatory issues as well as litigation matters involving regulatory, peer review, and reimbursement issues. Carey also provides guidance to clients on the application of the Stark Law, Antikickback Laws, False Claims Act, Civil Monetary Penalties, HIPAA, EMTALA, Medicare Part D, and general healthcare compliance work.

Carey holds a Master of Science degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi (1997) and is a former Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Alabama. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1992, where he served as Lead Articles Editor of the Alabama Law Review. Carey earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Vanderbilt University in 1988.

In the past, Carey has served as Adjunct Professor of Law at both the University of Alabama School of Law and the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham. He teaches courses on legal counseling, interviewing, and negotiation.

Carey is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, American Bar Association – Health Law Section, Alabama State Bar Association, and the Birmingham Bar Association. He was named to the Birmingham Business Journal’s 2005 Top 40 Under 40.

In addition to his work as an attorney, Carey is the husband of the former Amy Craddock and has two wonderful children: Eleanor (12) and Cooper (10). He enjoys tennis for fun and exercise, and reading is probably his favorite hobby of all. Carey also serves on the Board of the Oasis Women’s and Children’s Counseling Center and is an active member of his church, Our Lady of Sorrows, in Homewood, Alabama.

Experience

  • Created numerous joint venture arrangements for home health providers in the state
  • Assisted clients in obtaining certificates of need to establish a replacement acute care hospital, inpatient rehabilitation hospital, home health agencies, psychiatric hospitals, and dialysis facilities in several areas of the state
  • Participated in numerous administrative hearings in certificate of need contested cases across the state, including the longest CON hearing ever conducted in the state of Alabama
