Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP is pleased to announce that Charlotte attorney Joycelyn J. “Jo” Eason has been honored with a 2012 “Women of Justice” award from North Carolina Lawyers Weekly. This is the inaugural year for this award, which honors women in the legal profession who support access to justice in North Carolina through a commitment to pro bono work and volunteer service.
“We congratulate Jo on this prestigious honor,” said Firm Chairman Beau Grenier. “The award recognizes not only Jo’s talent as an attorney, but also her dedication to justice and serving the community.”
Eason, a former U.S. Air Force Captain and intelligence officer, received a Litigation Practitioner award. Part of her practice involves helping the firm’s bank and lender clients ensure they are in compliance with the Service members Civil Relief Act (SCRA). This law provides special protections for active duty and recently discharged U.S. military personnel regarding their financial obligations, including mortgages and consumer credit. Eason’s work in this area benefits both her clients and military personnel.
Eason also gives generously of her time and legal knowledge to ensure veterans receive access to all the benefits they deserve by virtue of their military service. She is an active participant in Lawyers Serving Warriors (LSW), a program that assists veterans applying for benefits from the Veterans Administration (VA). In her work for LSW, Eason handles cases and also coordinates efforts at the firm, managing other attorneys who take on matters from the organization. She has become a trusted advocate for veterans who are having difficulty navigating the VA system.
Eason maintains a broad litigation practice. Her cases include complex commercial litigation, business disputes, insurance defense, conservatorships, and pharmaceutical regulatory disputes. She assists the firm's health care litigation group with the representation of hospitals, nursing homes and other health care providers in litigation, including medical malpractice, administrative issues, professional negligence actions and regulatory compliance matters. Eason holds a J.D. from the College of William and Mary, Marshall Wythe School of Law; an M.P.A from Troy State University; and a B.S. from the U.S. Air Force Academy.
